How to Open and Close Hinged Hoop Earrings with Heart Charms

To open a hinged hoop earring, hold the metal hoop near its clasp, gently release the post from the catch, and let the hinged section swing open. To close it, align the post with the catch and press gently until it engages. Keep your grip on the hoop rather than pulling the heart drop.

A colorful heart draws the eye, but the small fastening above it is the part you handle each time you put an earring on. Taking a moment to understand that fastening makes the process easier.

This guide applies to hoops with a hinge and a click-in post. Earrings with butterfly backs, screw fittings or other closures need their own instructions. Follow the directions supplied with your particular pair.

First, find the hinge and the catch

Look at the metal hoop from the side in good light. A hinged hoop has a pivot where one section swings open. The catch is the meeting point where the narrow post locks into the other side.

These two points do different jobs: the hinge allows movement, while the catch holds the earring closed. The little link connecting a heart to the hoop is separate from both. Opening that link is not how you put the earring on.

The photo shows five heart-drop earrings displayed along a chain, with the hoops facing different directions. It is a useful reminder to inspect the side and back of an earring as well as its decorative front.

Try the closure before putting the earring on

  1. Work over a clear surface. Set down a soft cloth and handle one earring at a time. This gives you somewhere to place it while you look at the fastening.
  2. Support the metal hoop. Hold near the clasp with your fingertips. Let the heart hang freely instead of using it as a handle.
  3. Release the catch gently. Ease the post out of its catch in the direction intended for that closure, then allow the hinged section to swing open. Avoid twisting the hoop sideways or forcing it wider.
  4. Practice closing it. Bring the post and catch into alignment, then apply light pressure until they engage. A click can help you recognize the closure, but inspect it rather than relying on sound alone.

Put it on, then check the fastening

Once you understand the movement, open the hoop and gently guide the post through your ear piercing. Support the front while bringing the hinged section back toward the post. Close with the same light pressure you practiced off the ear.

Use a mirror to check that the post is seated in the catch and the clasp has fully engaged. Keep your fingers on the hoop during this check; tugging the heart is not a fastening test. For removal, support the hoop, release the catch and guide the post out gently.

What if the hoop will not close?

Take it off before investigating. Look for an obvious obstruction or a post that is not meeting the catch. If a gentle, correctly aligned attempt still fails, stop. A visibly bent post, stuck hinge or clasp that repeatedly opens needs advice from the seller or a jeweler.

Avoid bending the post, squeezing the hoop with pliers or adding glue. Adjustment instructions for another brand's earring may not suit your hardware.
